About the Kalamazoo Justice Project
The Kalamazoo Justice Project is a community-driven public accountability and reporting platform focused on how power operates in Kalamazoo County and the City of Kalamazoo—particularly within housing systems, courts, and local government.
What began as one person’s fight against unsafe housing conditions, retaliation, and court misconduct has grown into a broader effort to document patterns of injustice, amplify lived experiences, and connect individual stories to the policies and institutions that shape them.
The Project exists to make visible what often happens behind closed doors—and to ensure that residents are not navigating these systems alone.

Our Mission
The Kalamazoo Justice Project works to:
- Defend civil and human rights in housing, courts, and public systems
- Support low-income and HUD-assisted residents navigating complex legal and administrative processes
- Expose retaliation, misconduct, and conflicts of interest across courts and government entities
- Document patterns of systemic failure in housing, family, and criminal legal systems
- Hold public officials and institutions accountable through public reporting and community education
Who We Are
Jennifer L. Dayton is a civil rights advocate and founder of the Kalamazoo Justice Project, a public accountability platform examining how housing systems, courts, and local government impact residents in Kalamazoo County.
The Kalamazoo Justice Project was founded by Jennifer L. Dayton, a former public school teacher, small business owner, and civil rights advocate.
After experiencing harassment, eviction, and homelessness while raising two children, Jennifer began documenting her experience—only to discover that her story reflected broader civil rights concerns impacting residents across Kalamazoo County.
Her work now combines personal narrative, public records, court filings, historical research, and community reporting to examine how decisions made by landlords, courts, elected officials, and government agencies affect fundamental rights, due process, and access to justice.
What We Do
- Publish investigative reporting, first-hand accounts, and analysis connecting personal experiences to systemic failures in housing, courts, and local government.

- Provide accessible public resources and information for residents navigating housing instability, family court, criminal court, and related systems.
- Amplify community voices and lived experiences through written, video, and audio storytelling.
- Track patterns of misconduct, retaliation, and policy failure that impact civil and human rights.
